Lovely new bag fabrics:)

Encouraged by my first sale yesterday I went today morning to the market foraging for new fabric for purses:)
Fortunately in India there is no derth of good quality raw material.................so yes..........I bought a few goodies:)

I have been dabbling in faux leather till now,but now I have taken the plunge in the world of pure leather:) Got this lovely shade of rustish red textured leather..............its soooo wow!
Ordered another leather in yum plum:).............will pick it up tomorrow morning.
I had kept my eye on an amazing jute fabric, but I never bought it for the simple reason that my 35 year old machine would have got massacred sewing layers of such thick fabric .............but now that I possess my shiny new industrial machine I decided to go ahead with  it!
Here it is...............see the detailed weave..............its simply gorgeous!
Can't wait to start on this one:)
How can I go to the market & not fall for a printed fabric................I don't understand this undying love of mine for anything floral & printed!............So this is what I got
Also finished another purse yesterday night. The shape has a story behind it;)
I had decided on a rectangular shape & was cutting this while watching"Criminal Minds".................was so engrossed watching the depravity of human mind that I accidently snipped off the bottom edge & hence this shape:)))).....................But I like the way it finally turned out:)..................My photography skills just refuse to capture the true beauty of my purses:(..................well I can not be good at everything, now, can I;)

I decided to line this in a pretty striped fabric & here it is.

I am planning to add a shopping cart & paypal here,so my customers can buy anything they like from here directly instead of going to a third party site & worry about the registration & other formalities:)
The advantage for my customers is that whatever I will save as selling fees on etsy,I will pass on to my customers,so basically my bags & purses will be a few dollars cheaper here compared to on etsy & artfire:)
Isn't this a good idea:)....................But it will take a wee bit of time,I am swamped with work right now!
Now I am off to make red leather clutch which I have cut yesterday night:)

Am on Front Page of Etsy:)

Wohooo..............I just saw that my purse was featured on front page of Etsy:)))))
I have no idea when...............but that purse sold within minutes!!
This is the lovely treasury which was featured.
See the third one in the top line??
And by the way I am on 27 treasuries currently!!!!!
OK I am swooning:)

DIY purse kit

I am currently working on putting together a DIY kit to make my Pleated Wooden Handles Clutch.
I will be offering it in five colors to begin with in faux leather................deep red, camel brown, cream, black & gray.
These are the things I am planning to include.
Hard copies of pattern (made in card stock) along with pleat & dart marks for permanent use.
Detailed instructions along with pics on how to make it.
Two pieces in faux leather for front & back
Four pieces in faux leather to make the straps to hold the wooden bars
Two iron on interfacing (cut as per the size) for lining
Magnetic Snap
Rivets (needed are 4,but I will supply 8)
Wooden bars
Zip Lock Pouch to keep the WIP safe
This will give you not just a new "I made it"clutch to flaunt but the knowledge to make more anytime for yourself or to gift!
The hard copy is always so much more effective than a printed pdf pattern!!
There will be in depth info on -
How to add rivets
How to add magnetic snap
How to make a flawless "Arm Candy" piece yourself!!!

The only thing I am not providing is the lining...........that will be self catered:)
Wow...............I am buzzing with ideas & by the way I made my first sale on etsy:)
I sold my Checkered Ruffled Brown & White Baby:)..............here it is listed once more, have a look & see if I can tempt you into buying it ;)

My First Signature Clutch Design

I have been making purses for quite some time & naturally while making them there is lot of designing involved!
It is such a creative process!!
Finally I have come up with my first signature design for a clutch:)
Here it is
Made this in faux leather in gray...........such a lovely shade of gray:)
And yes I am copyrighting it.OK............I didn't invent pleats ,but the wooden handle bars are pretty unique!
Lots of purses use wooden handles but I haven't seen any straight bars used the way I have:)
The wooden bars are secured using straps of leather & then riveted for additional support & a cool look!
It looks pretty sassy:)...........................Its not just "Arm Candy" though, its boxy shape provides lot of space & a  pocket inside helps to carry additioanl stuff.
It closes with a magnetic snap .........................looks yummily stylish............ha ha I am inventing words along with designs;)
Any comments are welcome!

Bag Making Basics Part 5.................Hardware & Tools

Hardware sounds a little funny while talking about purses, but it is a fact!!!
We do need hardware along with tools while making purses.Right from the solid embellishments to the pliers we use are all hardware.I am going to add them alphabetically as I remember the sequence if I miss out something you know where to find me:)
So.......let's get started.Remember you may not need all of these, but if you are a passionate bag maker like me,I am sure you will have most of these or you will end up adding all these to your pile of bag making stuff  like me!!
 1. Awl- An awl  is a long pointed spike with which holes can be punctured in majority of materials, or existing holes can be enlarged. It is useful while  sewing heavy materials, such as leather or canvas.

2. Bag feet- OK............newbies don't laugh!!!!.....................I know bags can't walk, but they do have feet! Here they are in my new purse
I think now I don't have to explain what they are.............but anyways, they protect your bag's bottom:))
Shoes protecting bottom.................it does sound hilarious:))))

3.Buckles-It is basically  used to join two  ends, with one end attached to the purse and the other held by a catch in a secure but adjustable manner. For me,it is more decorative.I love the different finishes & designs it has to offer!
4.Chain-  Used instead of straps in clutches or small purses. In my opinion again they are more decorative than weight bearing.

5.Decorative beads-There is such a lovely & mind boggling variety of beads available!!!!! Metal, wooden, ceramic, acrylic, you name it & its available. They can jazz up any plain looking purse.....of course ,don't add so many that it will blind everyone with the bling:)

6. Frames-Ornamental purse frames add a professional finish to your purse or clutch. Again  available in a mind boggling variety..........I love the ones with antique finish. They add a  stability to the bags along with providing a ‘skeleton’ on which to construct your bag!!!................S o its a "win win" situation:) I will be very soon adding a tutorial on adding frames to bags..........so keep an eye here:
7.Grommets-A grommet is a ring inserted into a hole through the fabric, they  are usually flared or collared on each side to keep them in place, and are made of metal or plastic. For purses I always use metal grommets, plastic gives a tacky look!  A small grommet is  called an eyelet. Mostly used  to strengthen the holes for strapping but they are also good for draw-cords as the grommet prevents the cord from tearing through the hole.I use it more for  ornamental purpose like here.
To insert these you need grommet pliers. They are designed to insert the grommet /eyelet . These pliers are similar to a paper hole puncher, except instead of removing an object, they install  grommets !

8. Handles-Other than usual fabric handles ,you can add different types of handles too!Bamboo, beaded, corded, braided, leather, vinyl, wooden, plastic bag handles are a fab way to add a “mmm.....-it's-handmade,not just homemade” touch to your handbags.  Handles  instantly add a pro look to your bags. You can see my tutorial  on making different type of leather straps here.
9.Handle holders-These are used to attach  handles to the bag.Of course you can just stitch the straps to the bag,but as you make more purses you will want to experiment & adding holders is a lovely variation!...There are a plethora of holders available in market.I am a total sucker for them & always have a good stock available at hand:)
10. Key Fobs-They are basically the swivel latches which are used in purses.I use them as key fobs, they can be used to add detachable straps  to the bags too.
11.Machine foots-Machines provide a lot of foots............you can add them to your stock pile depending on your interests & usage. These are the most common types-Even Feed Foot/Walking Foot,Roller Foot,Leather Foot,Flat Fell Foot,Zipper Foot,Piping Foot.I have none:))))
Indian machines do not have these options.................so I have a regular sewing machine which I use to make the lining & pockets & an industrial machine to sew the leather, rexin, vinyl & canvas bags:)

12.Magnetic snap- Well.............you all know what is a magnetic snap:)................so I will save myself some typing & instead tell you that I have a tutorial on adding a magnetic snap to bags here. The non-magnetic version is called a snap fastener.
13.Plastic Grid- They are also known as plastic canvas & are used to create a “solid” bottom for purses. You can take the regular grid available for needle point too.
14. Purse Clasp-A purse clasp is a cool type of closure instead of a zipper or even magnetic snap.I like them especially on clutches...very neat!  They are not difficult to install and they can be added to almost any bag style.I like the tongue clasp also quite a bit!....................Sorry I don't have any at home so no pic:(

15.Rivets- They are probably the easiest way to attach straps to bags. They are super cheap too.....at least in India.I bought 1000 rivets for 90 bucks i.e 2 $!!!!!..................So I am going rivetty, rivetty, rivetty on all my bags:)

Put the smooth cap of the rivet from the front side ,back it up with the shank & you can feel the soft snap of them fitting together & then .............take a hammer & hammer away to glory!!!!!
Seriously,no kidding!............If you intend to make purses regularly, its a good idea to invest in an anvil...........it helps to maintain the concave shape of the rivet, otherwise even a flat rivet does not look bad!

If you are going to go into bag making business.............you can invest into a pop rivet gun where all you have to do is squeeze the trigger to attach the rivet....easy peasy!

16.Rotary cutter-It is a  practical tool for achieving the straight, squared lines that are so important while sewing anything ,not just bags!

17.Zipper-Now I am not going to be a smart ass & go tell you what zippers are;)...............But I do have tutorials on adding zipper to bags as top closure & adding a zippered pocket. So go enjoy!

Other than these, the common things which you will need are a Sewing machine(actually I AM a smart ass;),measuring tape, tailors chalk, pliers, pins,VERY important-seam ripper (duh........),scissors,iron,....................most importantly patience to do the ENDLESS fabric cutting & the courage to know that many a times you will end up throwing away everything & start afresh!

New purse with a different gusset

I am on a roll since I got my new machine:)
I had this lovely thick & very strong canvas which I did not want to try on my regular machine..........I have enough broken needles to have the wisdom;)
Well...............so with my new one I finally made a everyday bag out of it:)
I love the bright & cheerful color.See the gusset????
I did not make the regular gusset but instead added a contrast striped canvas seperately as the gusset:)
Will add a tutorial on how to do this kind of gusseting:)
On this one I decided to take a lil short cut & instead of my usually zippered top closure bags,I made a flap closure with magnetic snap.
But I can never overcome my obsession for zippers altogether,so I have added a zippered pocket inside:)
Old habits die hard!!!!
Hmm..................I will take better pics tomorrow morning & list it monday!

Etsy Friday

Etsy is a wonderful online mall for hand made stuff............I am sure lot's of you are aware of it.The newbies on etsy are forever struggling to get noticed...................it does not mean their stuff isn't good enough ,its just that they get lost among the more successful shops.I have decided to feature one such great etsy shop every friday:)

Bag Making Basics Part 4.................fabric

I was pretty busy last few days making new purses for my shops that I just did not get any time to continue with my bag making basics series:(
Anyways today I am going to write a post on the all important Fabric.
After learning the basic sewing terms, needles & threads its natural to understand what fabrics are best to make purses.
There isn't really a set fabric, you get to choose between lots of fabrics.......................from silks, brocades, canvas, cotton, leather, vinyl etc etc.

1. When you are just starting to make a purse for the first time, take a walk around your house before you head to the store or buy fabric online.I am sure you will find tons of fabric which can be used to make purses.
Go in for a sturdy fabric, not too thin, not too thick.Avoid stretchy material too..........its a pain getting the shape right.
Think of old curtains,tablecloths,linen..................I have made a purse out of a wrap around skirt too!!!
You can get the tutorial here.

2. Try out good quality thick cotton, burlap or hemp for beginners.............as you get more accomplished you can move on to silks & brocades.Leathers, should always be tried when you are fairly confident of your sewing skills!!

3. Decide what kind of purse you want before choosing a fabric.................lets say you want a nice evening  clutch you can go in for some blingy fabric but also keep in mind that you will have to add layers of interfacing and interlining & you don't want too many layers otherwise its gonna be really difficult to sew!!!!
If you want to make a daily use bag or diaper bag,go in for a nice cotton print in bright & cheerful colors;)
Well that would be my first choice, you decide as per your color preference.

4. If the fabric is washable always pre -wash & pre- shrink it before you sew it................I know it adds one more step to your purse making & I too hate doing it,but you don't want your outer purse fabric to shrink on your interfacing if you ever spill something on the bag & have to wash it..................or you can always carry it in a transparent bag so you never need to wash it;)
OK..................I have a sad sense of humor but you get the point:)

5. Choose good quality interfacing & interlining....................now when I started out I used to get confused between interlining & interfacing. Here's the deal-
you have one outer fabric right?
you also have a lining
to the outer fabric & lining you may want to add interfacing to make it stiff or so that the fabric retains some shape................so now you have outer fabric stuck or sewn to interfacing & lining stuck or sewn to  interfacing, now you add another layer of batting or flannel before the final assembly. This is the interlining. Many patterns do not call for interlining, but if you feel your purse needs more body & suppleness you can add interlining.Always cut the interlining half an inch smaller than the interfacing otherwise you are going to break a lot of needles sewing up all those layers together!!!!!

6. If you decide to add an interlining its a good idea to put interlining directly on the outside fabric & then iron on the interfacing...................it is much easier & you do not have to worry that your interlining is not even!!!!

7. Next important thing to chose is your lining.Always choose a good quality sturdy fabric .I use unbleached cotton a lot.I also like to use cotton twill. If your outside fabric is busy go in for a plain lining & vice versa.
 8. You can make the handles too in the same fabric or if you are running short of fabric get innovative!!!!
Try an old belt ,cut out that old jeans or coat!!!         Seriously I am not kidding:)
You can make plain handles by adding interfacing & sewing them  straight or go in for variations like these.

get the tutorial to make this  here

See this tutorial to make these straps.

9. Once you are more confident then the world is your oyster.....try out silks,leather,canvas,vinyl,rexine........
There are plethora of online fabric stores so I am not going to write any specific one, though I never buy fabric online...............I need to feel the fabric between my fingers to get a feel of what I will end up with:)

10. Lastly enjoy  your fabrics & your creations.Dont be afraid to screw up!!!!

My new sewing machine:)

Good Morning:)
I finally invested in an industrial machine.....................my birthday present to myself:)
This birthday I didn't buy myself diamonds, jewellery, clothes like I usually do but instead bought something that will help me in my business!!!!!!
Its a sign I am really growing up:(
Not really sure this maturity is a good thing or not!!!!!!!
Anywayz .......here it is.I know industrial machines are not as pretty as regular machines to look at.................but they are sturdy & that's what you need while sewing tough fabrics!!
Please ignore the artwork on the walls.....................I have Picasso & Monet in waiting at my home!!!!!!

I am again featured in 3 more treasuries today!!!!

All NewTweaked Pleated Clutch

Hey........................last time when I finished making my sunray pleated clutch I told you all that I was not happy with the shape of the clutch.I tweaked the pattern a bit & finally arrived at this size & shape.
I am pretty happy with it................it looks  like a clutch now :)
Instead of a zipper I also added 2 magnetic snaps to the opening.
 Pretty spacious too:)
I really likes the pocket inside..............it has the same print as the outside fabric, just in beige ,perfect for the pocket.
I had only that much of scrap fabric left !!!......................I am so glad I didn't throw it away:)      It perfectly complements the outside fabric:)
